True Blood, True Self

Ever since Maryann came into this sleepy little Louisiana town, the sex has vamped up. And not cuz of the vampires. Offering even the rare hot men who respect their women (and rip off their clothes…respectfully, of course) for the hetero female crowd. It’s Alan Ball. He has fabulous taste in his men and doesn’t apologize for luxuriating long shots of well-lit musculature.  Amen.

This week’s episode took Bon Temps* to a whole new level. It was vamp-on-vamp covered in mortals’ blood; vamp-on-human; humans-on-behind-beneath-on top of-humans; shifter-on-shifter culminating in an orgy that Eyes Wide Shut only aspired to in Kubrick’s fantasies.  And therein, within the sexual free-for-all, lies that infamous line-to-be-crossed.  (*bon temps = good times in French)

The call to freedom in terms of sexuality, sex, or even species also rides on the fringes of chaos that the Establishment fears and warns us of. If we accept the vampires — the gays, the women, the Mexicans, the others — then it’s just a step away from the orgies of immortal demons.

So is it to be orgy or repression?  Either possessed or a betraying harlot of a woman, Daphne wisely said before leading Sam to his death:  you can’t just hole yourself up; sharing your story and connecting with others is all we have.

Or as JC said in Gospel of Thomas, “If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.”

Nothing that’s been caged remains bound for long. And it unleashes with a fury.

Then again, Sam is potentially being sacrificed and JC was crucified:  hey, no one said revelation of the truth — or your true self — was easy.  It seems to be the hard road of education, honest reflection, and personal responsibility that will keep us from demonic orgies or closeted self-slavery.
